“Environmental Performance and Ecosystem Services of Seafood Production”

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to delve into the intricate relationship between seafood production and its environmental impacts, with a focus on evaluating the ecological footprints and ecosystem services provided by various seafood production systems. Contributions to this Special Issue should significantly enhance the body of knowledge on the sustainability of aquatic species production systems, proposing, where possible, innovative methodologies for analyzing the negative impacts and benefits of aquaculture and fisheries production chains.

Key topics:

  • Life cycle analyses (LCAs), ecological footprints, and other quantitative tools to measure the performance of seafood production practices;
  • Nutrient cycling;
  • Habitat alteration and impacts on biodiversity of fisheries and aquaculture;
  • Impacts of climate change on seafood production from fisheries and aquaculture and possible mitigation and/or adaptation strategies;
  • Quantification of climate-mitigation or climate-adaptation services of certain typologies of aquaculture, such as the cultivation of seaweed and molluscs, and related proposed methodologies;
  • Production methods and technologies aimed at increasing diversification and environmental performance (IMTA, polyculture, aquaponics).
  • Exploration and quantification of ecosystem services provided by seafood production systems (with a special focus on regulating and supporting ecosystem services).
